Hong Kong is marking the 29th anniversary of its return to Chinese sovereignty on Wednesday, with businesses and authorities offering a range of promotions for the occasion.
A flag‑raising ceremony at Wan Chai’s Golden Bauhinia Square will launch the celebrations, attended by Chief Executive John Lee Ka‑chiu, other senior officials and prominent community figures.
Following the ceremony, the chief executive will deliver his annual handover speech at a reception held at the nearby Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.
More than 1,000 shops, restaurants and other outlets are providing special retail and dining offers to encourage a festive public‑holiday spirit.
Residents can also enjoy free tram rides and complimentary access to sports facilities operated by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.
