A Hong Kong court has ordered the acquittal of 14 defendants charged in connection with the alleged murder of a former triad member five years ago. The ruling came after the court found that prosecutors failed to establish that the deceased’s fatal head injuries were caused by intentional assaults rather than injuries sustained during boxing sessions at his gym.
On Monday, the High Court directed the jury to acquit all defendants, ruling that the evidence presented was insufficient to draw conclusive inferences regarding the events that occurred between June 25 and 26, 2021.
The prosecution had alleged that 12 men and one woman, aged 26 to 34, acted in concert to kill 27-year-old Luk Wing-ho at a gym located in the Rodeo Centre, an industrial complex in Tai Kok Tsui.
Tse Ka-chai, Chow Man-hong, Tsui Chun-yin, Mabo Lee, Choi Hung, Kwok Yiu-ki, Lai Ka-po, Lam Chun-hong, Ng Ting-fu, Wong Shing-kwan, Shek King-sang, Anthony Ho Tsan-ue, and Leung Cheuk-yung all pleaded not guilty to the joint charge of murder.
Tse, Shek, Ho, and Leung also faced additional charges of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice for allegedly destroying evidence related to Luk’s death.
Additionally, 57-year-old Lee Chi-ki stood trial for assisting an offender, accused of renting a flat in Fanling to serve as a hideout for his daughter.
