The president of Hong Kong’s legislature urged fellow members to adopt more rigorous conduct in order to meet public expectations after a lawmaker resigned following his arrest on suspected drink‑driving charges.
Speaking out on Saturday, Legislative Council President Starry Lee Wai‑king said that William Wong Kam‑fai’s resignation the day before demonstrated his readiness to take responsibility.
“I fully understand the high expectations the public places on Legco members. Wong’s incident has already ignited intense public debate, and as Legco president I have been occupied with this issue over the past few days,” Lee said.
“Wong’s resignation reflects his sense of responsibility, and the matter will likely be processed through the courts in line with existing laws and regulations.”
“Every Legco member recognizes the high standards society expects of them and public officials. I hope all members draw lessons from this episode, hold themselves to a tighter standard, exercise greater caution in their duties, and conduct themselves with heightened rigor.”
Wong, who also serves as an associate dean in the Faculty of Engineering at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, was arrested on June 29 after allegedly driving his car into two parked private vehicles on campus. Police detained him following a failed breath‑alyser test, and the incident surfaced publicly on Wednesday.
