The two-month-old child of a Hong Kong couple embroiled in a custody dispute over their two children has been hospitalized after experiencing fever and cough, with medical staff considering a lumbar puncture to test for meningitis. The parents, Tsang Wai-bong and Kwan Pui-sin, previously sparked public outcry for not registering the infant’s birth in Hong Kong and were arrested on suspicion of child neglect.
The couple claims they are restricted to weekly visits to the child in a shelter and alleges insufficient support for the baby’s need for breastfeeding. Danny was admitted to Ruttonjee Hospital’s emergency department on Sunday afternoon and later transferred to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital. Medical updates indicated that a lumbar puncture might be required if the infant’s condition deteriorates, to assess for meningitis or central nervous system disorders.
Authorities clarified that lumbar punctures are routine diagnostic procedures in pediatric cases, used to analyze cerebrospinal fluid or measure intracranial pressure. The parents noted that one guardian was permitted to remain overnight with the child, and Danny’s condition reportedly stabilized following breastfeeding by Kwan.
