The spokesperson for Yemen’s armed forces, Col. Majid Abdullah Al-Nuzaili, stated on Saturday that the Houthi militia has modified Iranian air defense weapons into loitering missiles, which are being launched from Hodeidah Governorate toward international air routes over the southern Red Sea. These missiles, converted by Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps experts in Yemen, can cruise for up to 25 minutes and use thermal tracking to attack any heat source — without distinguishing between military and civilian targets.
Al-Nuzaili warned that this poses a direct and severe threat to civil aviation safety, endangering passengers on all aircraft using these routes, including humanitarian and relief flights to Yemen and the region. He further noted that the escalation aligns with recent threats from Iranian officials Mohammad Mokhber, an adviser to the Supreme Leader, and Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, to disrupt regional aviation services following sanctions on Iranian airlines.
