Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose, and countless other top professionals would likely agree that the prolonged conflict between the PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and LIV Golf ultimately benefited nearly every stakeholder in professional golf.

For those who remained loyal to the established tours, LIV’s bold entry catalyzed long-overdue reforms—purse sizes expanded and competitive stagnation dissipated. For players who defected to the Saudi-backed league, life-changing financial windfalls awaited. Players like Bryson DeChambeau leveraged their LIV platform to boost their profiles, while veterans such as Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter received lucrative final paychecks. Early LIV entrants like Brooks Koepka and Patrick Reed capitalized quickly before the Saudi Public Investment Fund’s withdrawal plunged the league into bankruptcy proceedings.

Yet among all the winners emerging from golf’s civil war, none navigated the upheaval more strategically than Spain’s Eugenio Chacarra.

The young Spaniard was among LIV’s earliest signees. As the world’s second-ranked amateur while at Oklahoma State University, he accepted a substantial signing bonus to join Sergio Garcia’s Fireballs GC in 2022, diverging from his original ambition of competing on the PGA Tour. Chacarra, renowned for his exceptional ball-striking ability, experienced early success on LIV but subsequently battled injuries. As his contract neared expiration following the 2024 season, he opted against attempting to regain his position through LIV qualifying school.

Instead, Chacarra openly expressed dissatisfaction with LIV’s approach, characterizing it as driven purely by financial interests. Having secured $16 million across 34 starts, he sought to pursue his authentic aspirations and believed his talent could eventually lead him back to golf’s premier stages.

“I witnessed the transformative impact of PGA Tour victories and how they reshape careers,” Chacarra explained to Flushing It following his departure from LIV. “There are major championships, Ryder Cup appearances, and ranking points at stake. On LIV, nothing fundamentally changes—only monetary compensation. Whether you finish thirty or first makes no difference. I’m not driven by additional wealth. What truly transforms lives is competing in Hawaii and securing major championship berths, particularly the Masters and Ryder Cup.”

Following his exit from LIV Golf, Chacarra possessed limited options beyond Asian Tour status. However, he maximized his opportunities through sponsor invites on the DP World Tour, culminating in victory at the Hero Indian Open. Despite fading toward the conclusion of the 2025 season—which cost him PGA Tour playing privileges—he committed to enhancing his nutrition and recovery protocols throughout 2026 to maintain consistency during crucial periods.

That dedication bore fruit impressively. Chacarra captured both the KLM Open and the DS Automobiles 83° Open d’Italia consecutively, effectively securing his position on the 2027 PGA Tour roster. Competing despite a fractured toe, he delivered a T3 finish at the French Open followed by T2 at the Spanish Open, propelling himself to second place in the Race to Dubai standings—just behind Patrick Reed and ahead of Rory McIlroy.

His commanding presence continued at the recent DP World India Championship in Delhi, where he posted rounds of 67-67-63-70 to defeat Daniel Hillier by two strokes, claiming his third title of the season and ascending to the top of the Race to Dubai leaderboard. This performance moved him ahead of Reed, positioning him as potentially only the third Spanish player in history to capture the prestigious Race to Dubai crown.

During his victory interview at the challenging Delhi Golf Club, Chacarra reflected on his remarkable journey from promising amateur to LIV defector and now Race to Dubai leader. Now a four-time DP World Tour winner with his aspirations within reach, he appeared to have expertly managed golf’s turbulent landscape, leveraging financial opportunity before betting decisively on his own abilities.

“When departing LIV, my goals remained unchanged—to earn major championship starts, qualify for the Ryder Cup, win on the DP World Tour, and eventually compete on the PGA Tour,” Chacarra stated on Sunday. “LIV didn’t exist during my childhood dreams, but when they entered the scene, offering substantial support as one of the world’s top amateurs, it was irresistible. I’m deeply appreciative of that experience. My tenure there was valuable and significantly contributed to various aspects of my career. It provided enhanced travel capabilities, superior accommodation, and allowed me to offer my family and future loved ones financial security.”

“I remain eternally grateful toward LIV and have nothing negative to share about that period. It simply reached its natural conclusion. Together with my team and family, we determined that the next phase was appropriate timing. I possess strong self-belief and confidence in my abilities. My daily motivation stems from aspiring to join the elite players globally and contending in major championships.”

Chacarra admitted experiencing diminished motivation toward the end of his LIV tenure, explaining why he chose not to attempt a return through qualifying school. Witnessing former rivals achieve major victories and Ryder Cup selections while he competed elsewhere reinforced his determination to follow a different trajectory. His core ambitions never wavered due to LIV; however, regaining personal conviction became essential before transitioning to the DP World Tour circuit.

That crucial element materialized through unwavering self-confidence and relentless effort. Chacarra emphasized, “Belief in oneself represents the ultimate necessity. While challenging, this conviction fuels my daily dedication to training and pursuing excellence.”

Upon sinking his final putt for par on Sunday, Chacarra celebrated with an enthusiastic fist pump, receiving congratulations from European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald, who acknowledged his ascent to the Race to Dubai lead. With the 2027 Ryder Cup scheduled at Adare Manor just eleven months away, Chacarra has positioned himself prominently on Donald’s radar as Europe aims for an unprecedented three consecutive victories.

Looking ahead to remaining events this season, Chacarra understands sustained excellence will be required to maintain his advantage over Reed and McIlroy, who seeks a record eighth Race to Dubai title. His immediate objective includes finishing within the top fifty of the Official World Golf Ranking to secure his inaugural Masters Tournament invitation. Above all, earning a different form of recognition from Donald next year—a selection to represent Europe rather than merely receiving an invitation—represents his ultimate professional milestone.

Achieving inclusion among Donald’s automatic team selections aligns with his lifelong vision. As Chacarra expressed, “Securing qualification for the Ryder Cup team through performance metrics remains paramount to me. Being selected based on merit, rather than as a discretionary choice, reflects true achievement. Our organization continues working diligently toward this endgame, and I anticipate maintaining this momentum over the coming year.”

Already possessing the defining victory of his career—one secured by skillfully navigating golf’s recent upheaval—Eugenio Chacarra now stands poised to fulfill the dreams that sparked his journey decades ago.
