At the time, Broner stood at 27‑0 with 22 knockouts, positioning him as a rising pound‑for‑pound contender. However, the events of December 14, 2013, proved to be a turning point in his career.
Hailing from Cincinnati, Ohio, Broner made his professional debut in May 2008, stopping Allante Davis in the first round. He then compiled a streak of twenty consecutive victories.
In November 2011, Broner captured his first world title by stopping Vicente Rodriguez in the third round to claim the vacant WBO super‑featherweight championship. Nevertheless, he was stripped of the belt before his first defense after failing to meet the weight requirement.
He then moved up in weight and stopped Antonio Demarco via eighth‑round TKO, capturing the WBC lightweight title and becoming a two‑division world champion.
Nearly nine months later, in June 2013, he stepped into a third‑division title fight, outpointing Paulie Malignaggi to win the WBA welterweight championship.
At just 23 years old, Broner seemed poised for superstardom. Yet, six months after his victory over Malignaggi, in his 28th professional bout, he emerged as a markedly different fighter.
Ahead of his clash with Marcos Maidana, Broner engaged in his trademark trash talk and comedic antics, entering the bout as a heavy favorite at 5‑to‑1 odds.
From the opening bell, Maidana landed a powerful left hook that rocked Broner, and proceeded to overwhelm him with a flurry of punches throughout the first round.
At 2:40 of the second round, Maidana’s decisive left hook sent Broner to the canvas. Though Broner rose, Maidana maintained relentless pressure.
Throughout rounds three to seven, Maidana set the tempo, and with just 1:29 left in the eighth round, he dropped Broner again with another hard left hook.
For the rest of the twelve‑round contest, Maidana continued to dominate with relentless activity, ultimately securing a unanimous decision victory.
Following the Maidana title fight, Broner was never the same. The defeat made him more cautious, prompting a move down in weight class where he subsequently won three consecutive bouts.
His next major appearance was a catch‑weight bout against Shawn Porter at 144 pounds, where despite the high stakes, Broner fell short on the judges’ scorecards.
Returning to the 140‑pound division, Broner defeated Khabib Allakhverdiev to claim the vacant WBA super‑lightweight title, then added two more wins before suffering a high‑profile loss to Mikey Garcia.
Broner’s final notable bout took place in January 2019, when he was outpointed by Manny Pacquiao. Five years later, his last ring appearance ended in a unanimous decision loss to Blair Cobb.
With a career record of 35‑5‑1 and 24 knockouts, Broner is a four‑division world champion; many believe that, had the Maidana fight never occurred, his legacy could have been even more legendary.
Prior to Maidana, Broner was a skilled pressure fighter who excelled at throwing combinations. Post‑Maidana, he adopted a more passive style, became cautious, and hesitated to throw punches for fear of counter‑attacks.
Currently, Broner has leveraged his fame into a successful streaming presence, partnering with Misfits boxer Deen the Great. At 36, his boxing career is on hold, though speculation persists about a potential comeback against Chris Eubank Jr.
