The shift began when Taylor Swift appeared at the NBA Finals wearing a custom “Stevie Knicks” T-shirt, sparking a movement that shows no signs of slowing down. Customized, bespoke apparel has emerged as the defining trend of the season. During the FIFA World Cup, the presence of players’ partners introduced a new aesthetic to the sidelines, featuring everything from embroidered denim to cheeky graphic tees and team-themed bustiers. This trend extends far beyond the VIP seats; throughout the recent major tournaments in New York and beyond, spectators have increasingly opted for handcrafted pieces, often embellished or painted by local artists.

This movement represents more than a fleeting trend; it marks a fundamental evolution in how athletic style integrates with high fashion. The convergence of the World Cup, the NBA Finals, and New York City’s cultural scene has propelled this aesthetic to the forefront of fashion—a momentum that is expected to carry into the Formula 1 season, the US Open, and the upcoming NFL season. Simultaneously, sportswear elements are becoming staples in everyday wardrobes. Brands like Cossa New York, Corteiz, and Algoritmo Studios are redefining jerseys through sophisticated cuts and embellishments, while high-profile collaborations like Willy Chavarria x Adidas and Jacquemus x Nike x France continue to dominate streetwear.
“It used to feel like your only option was throwing on a jersey, but now people want to show up to a game looking like themselves. This summer really reinforced that. Between the World Cup and the NBA Finals in New York, it felt like sports and fashion were completely intertwined,” said Kristin Juszczyk, wife of NFL player Kyle Juszczyk. Juszczyk launched her own brand, Off Season, after gaining viral fame for her reworked jerseys, corsets, and dresses designed for herself and fellow NFL partners, including Taylor Swift.
“The line between ‘game day outfit’ and ‘your closet’ will disappear,” she predicts.
