[Your CASH]Zcash Unveils Post-Quantum Signature Upgrades to Defend Against AI and Quantum Cryptanalysis
In brief
- Zakura stated that its team expects post‑quantum signature opcodes to arrive in Zcash by January, enabling hash‑based signatures for the network’s transparent payment model.
- The approach pairs address rotation with private information retrieval (PIR), a capability being rolled out this week in the Vizor wallet so that servers cannot link a user’s addresses.
- This strategy follows Ethereum researcher Justin Drake’s “bunker‑mode” warning, which applies only to transparent payments and leaves no confirmed network activation date.
While much of the crypto ecosystem continues to weigh the implications of bunker mode, one group of Zcash developers argues that a concrete defense is already underway.
Zakura, who runs a full Zcash node, reported that the team anticipates the introduction of post‑quantum signature opcodes in the coming quarter, allowing the network to validate a newly standardized type of signature.

According to an engineering post by Roman Akhtariev, the objective is “full post‑quantum security for transparent pools using hash‑based signatures.”
Zcash distinguishes between shielded transactions, which conceal the sender, receiver, and amount, and transparent transactions, which are publicly visible like Bitcoin. A transparent address stores a hash of a public key, remaining hidden until the owner spends from it and the underlying key becomes visible on chain.
Here’s our plan for quantum‑safe, unlinkable, rotating taddrs. Possible with Zcash, today.
While others are worrying about the viability of rotating transparent addresses, we’re already solving linkability.

Zakura explains that the solution pairs two independent safeguards. Wallets will rotate to a fresh address after each transaction, keeping public keys out of sight, while adding a hash‑based backup signature called WOTS. Hash‑based constructions evade the elliptic‑curve cryptography that researchers fear AI or quantum machines could ultimately compromise.

Rotation introduces a privacy trade‑off; when a wallet requests balance checks across multiple addresses, a server may infer relationships between those addresses. Zakura’s design counters this via Private Information Retrieval (PIR), a cryptographic method that allows a wallet to request records without disclosing which specific entries were sought, a feature currently available in the Vizor wallet where users can toggle “private queries” in settings.
“While others are worried about the pragmatism of rotating transparent addresses, we are already tackling linkability,” Zakura wrote on X.”
That statement acknowledges Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake’s recent appeal for holders to migrate assets toward fresh addresses. The community reaction to his call was not uniformly positive. Drake cautioned that advances in AI‑driven mathematical approaches could undermine the Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA) protecting Bitcoin and Ethereum earlier than anticipated—potentially within months rather than years. The lead researcher of Ethereum, Vitalik Buterin, subsequently expressed optimism that such breakthroughs could occur sometime within the next two years.
Crucially, Zakura’s initiative targets Zcash’s transparent pool solely, and the architectural post did not specify activation mechanisms or exact timelines for network‑wide rollout.
