HSBC launched its Hong Kong dollar-backed stablecoin, RedCoin (RCHKD), on October 23 via its PayMe payments platform, enabling eligible users to transfer tokens and make merchant payments.

The bank announced that PayMe reaches over 3.3 million users and more than 100,000 merchants, with wallet activations continuing in phases, indicating the network’s potential scale.

Initial functionality focuses on peer-to-peer payments and merchant transactions, with future plans to support tokenized investment products through the separate HSBC HK Mobile Banking App later in 2026.

To use RedCoin, PayMe users must fulfill wallet eligibility requirements and activate a dedicated stablecoin wallet before converting HKD to tokens. Per HSBC’s terms, acquiring one token deducts HK$1 from the user’s HKD balance within the same channel.

After activation, users can transfer RedCoin to other PayMe stablecoin wallet holders. For purchases, the FAQ confirms customers can spend their RedCoin balance at any merchant accepting PayMe, without verifying individual stablecoin acceptance.

RedCoin distribution is limited to HSBC’s official channels—PayMe is currently active, with the HSBC HK App integration pending. The bank emphasized that the token is not listed on third-party platforms and operates on its proprietary distributed ledger network.

Redemption requests must be submitted through approved apps, with HSBC committing to process valid redemptions at par within one business day, subject to standard fees. Transactions may be declined or delayed due to wallet limits, incomplete instructions, legal or fraud considerations, or unforeseen circumstances beyond HSBC’s control.

The bank stated that RedCoin is fully backed by segregated, liquid, and high-quality assets, with reserve levels consistently covering outstanding tokens. RedCoin does not earn interest and lies outside the scope of Hong Kong’s Deposit Protection Scheme.

HSBC’s RedCoin rollout brings an HKD stablecoin to PayMe, while its separate HSBC app wallet remains planned and non-interoperable.

Investments Remain on the Horizon

HSBC intends to introduce a stablecoin wallet feature in its HSBC HK Mobile Banking App later in 2026, supporting tokenized investment products. This includes plans for a new share class of the bank’s HKD money market fund.

The FAQ notes these services as “coming soon” and specifically states that RedCoin transfers between PayMe and the HSBC HK App stablecoin wallets are not supported.
