IBM CEO Arvind Krishna clarified misconceptions about a prolonged tech slowdown during a recent appearance on “The Claman Countdown,” noting that a significant portion of delayed enterprise deals have since been reinstated.
The executive emphasized that temporary disruptions, largely driven by a 60% surge in semiconductor costs, prompted clients to shift spending toward physical hardware rather than software. This shift temporarily impacted IBM’s software revenue but has since corrected, with one-third of affected deals resuming.
Krishna highlighted that artificial intelligence continues to serve as a core growth area for the company, which is actively restructuring its sales strategies to mitigate future delays caused by similar market volatility.
“One-third of all the deals that fell out of the second quarter have already come back. So that gives us a signal, maybe not proof yet, but a signal that that was indeed just a deferral for a few weeks, not a destruction,” Krishna stated.
This clarification follows IBM’s downward revision of its full-year revenue growth forecast from over 5% to 4%-5%, reflecting short-term challenges in the tech sector.
The company experienced a notable decline in upfront software purchases, which account for 20% of its software revenue, as clients prioritized hardware amid fluctuating chip prices. However, Krishna anticipates a rebound as market conditions stabilize.
Krishna also announced IBM’s strategic focus on quantum technology, including its acquisition of HRL Laboratories, positioning the company to lead emerging markets in this field. He projected quantum computing could achieve a $1 trillion industry impact within the next decade.
“We must prioritize growing the 80% of our business that is stable rather than relying on the 20% that grows rapidly,” Krishna added, underscoring the company’s shift toward sustainable growth models.
