IBM has announced new rack-mounted and single-frame configurations for its z17 mainframes, formally finalizing the z17 product family. The z17 ME2 (single-frame) and z17 MER (rack-mounted) bundles were introduced in a recent Tuesday update, though specific technical details remain undisclosed.
The ME2 variant integrates a dedicated AI accelerator, positioning it against x86-based servers for inference tasks. IBM asserts it matches the throughput of a remote x86 server with 21 cores while processing up to 2.5 million fraud detection inference operations per second with a 1-millisecond response time.
The company highlights advancements across AI adoption, security simplification, compliance enhancements, and modernization of critical enterprise workloads. Orders for the new systems will commence on August 12th.
Previously, IBM CEO Arvind Krishna noted the z17’s status as the best-selling mainframe in two decades, emphasizing operational cost efficiency over alternatives for AI workloads. Analysts, including Gartner, suggest mainframe adoption can be more economical than VMware in certain scenarios, though they warn that COBOL modernization initiatives leveraging generative AI may face significant challenges.
