Mayor Zohran Mamdani says agents fired at a car with a child inside; DHS says the man was an arrest target.

An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer shot a man in New York City’s Marble Hill neighborhood on Thursday, prompting Mayor Zohran Mamdani to denounce the incident as an “unconscionable and incredibly serious situation.”
In a statement posted on X, Mamdani said preliminary reports indicate agents surrounded a vehicle containing the man and a five-year-old child before discharging multiple rounds. The child was reportedly unharmed physically, the mayor added.
Mamdani said he contacted President Donald Trump directly and demanded an immediate halt to all ICE enforcement actions within the city. “I will not stand by while ICE agents terrorize our communities,” he stated.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed that ICE officers were conducting a “targeted enforcement operation” in the Bronx around 4 p.m. to apprehend a Dominican national with a prior criminal conviction. The agency said an officer “discharged his weapon,” injuring the man, and that the incident remains under investigation.
According to the New York Police Department, the man remained conscious and was receiving medical treatment at a local hospital.
ICE Under Scrutiny
The shooting follows months of intensifying criticism directed at the agency.
In January, federal immigration agents fatally shot two U.S. citizens in Minneapolis: Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, killed by an ICE agent on January 7, and Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care nurse, shot by a U.S. border agent.
Following Good’s death, Trump administration officials labeled her a “domestic terrorist,” even as video footage of the shooting cast doubt on assertions that she had attempted to run over an agent. The federal government subsequently removed local authorities from the investigation, rejected demands for a civil rights probe, and deployed hundreds of additional agents to Minnesota—bringing the total to 3,000—as protests erupted in hundreds of U.S. cities.
President Trump attributed shifting public opinion on the immigration agency to unfair media coverage, urging DHS and ICE to publicize the “violent criminals” they apprehend.
ICE has been assigned a target of one million deportations annually. The agency doubled in size to more than 22,000 agents by January and is now the highest-funded federal law enforcement agency, with approximately $75 billion allocated to it over four years under a tax bill signed by Trump last year.
