shortly before 7 a.m. on Tuesday, immigration officers pursuing a white work van in Houston’s Magnolia Park neighborhood fatally shot the driver, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, 52, in his abdomen.
ICE claimed the officer opened fire in self-defense, alleging Mr. Salgado Araujo had “weaponized” his van by ramming two agency vehicles and attempting to run over an agent. The operation did not initially target Mr. Salgado Araujo or the three passengers in his van, per a DHS spokesperson.
Bystander footage from Canal Street captures the vehicle’s erratic movements. The van turned sharply onto a blocked residential block, causing the lead SUV to lose control. A second SUV collided with the van, and an agent exited to pursue on foot as the driver reversed.
Attempt to Box In Van
Footage shows an ICE agent accelerating alongside the van before veering sharply toward it, possibly causing contact. Both vehicles executed a U-turn, and an agent exited the Jeep. Meanwhile, another ICE SUV cut through a parking lot and pursued the van head-on.
The van reversed, pulling away from pursuing agents. Footage later captures the van’s damaged side panel. During this exchange, the vehicle’s positioning and potential collisions remain unclear due to obscured camera angles.
Pursuit Ends
The pursuing SUV reversed back toward the van, and an agent helped apprehend three passengers from the vehicle. Mr. Salgado Araujo, found bleeding on the ground with his hands bound, was not among them. Two agents then deflected to his side as he lay moaning.
