The United States acknowledges Iceland’s referendum on August 29 concerning whether to resume negotiations for European Union accession. The U.S. respects the sovereign decision of the Icelandic people and expresses confidence in Iceland’s ongoing role as a strong NATO ally and a close partner of the United States and Europe.
