Abstract, an Ethereum (ETH) Layer-2 blockchain developed by Igloo Inc., the parent company behind Pudgy Penguins, is winding down operations following three years of activity.

Key Features of Abstract

According to the project, it established an industry benchmark for on-chain discovery and distribution, assisting builders in aligning their products with specific markets.

The company was also well-regarded for its proprietary Abstract Global Wallet (AGW). The platform distinguished itself as a cross-application smart contract wallet that eliminated the need for seed phrases or browser extensions through native account abstraction. This allowed users to sign up and authenticate using conventional methods such as email, social accounts, or passkeys, removing the complexity of 12-word recovery phrases.

Throughout its journey, Abstract reported facilitating more than 325 million transactions. Additionally, it achieved over $6 billion in decentralized exchange (DEX) volume and $40 million in ecosystem revenue. The platform exceeded 100 unique applications and 4 million wallets.

Moreover, top brands and intellectual properties, notably Disney and Red Bull Racing, utilized Abstract to connect audiences through on-chain experiences, resulting in the onboarding of more than 400,000 users.

What Went Wrong

Abstract’s decision stemmed from the realization that it could not keep pace with the rapid evolution and exponentially growing competition in the Web3 landscape. The company admitted the trajectory had already diverged significantly from what it envisioned when first conceiving its business model.

The team behind the L2 explained that operating a chain focused solely on consumer crypto has become unsustainable under a standalone model. Its siloed decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem ultimately proved to be its downfall, resulting in thin on-chain liquidity, interoperability issues, and a tighter budget compared to competitors.

Abstract revealed that it explored ways to scale over the past 12 months to find product-market fit. However, it stated that the chain landscape had “changed radically” amid significant headwinds.

After thorough deliberations and careful evaluation, the team behind Abstract found that the best path forward for the chain would be an orderly wind-down.

Schedule of Shutdown

Abstract will cease all operations on December 15, 2026. It advised users to bridge their assets via Migration Hub or its native bridge to offload them securely.

The company warned that all funds in the network will no longer be accessible by the deadline. Furthermore, it cautioned users to avoid sites other than those it specified and not to entertain DMs from people claiming to represent the company.
