The CDC reports that 1,645 cases of cyclosporiasis have been confirmed nationwide, with an additional 5,100 cases under investigation.
No deaths have been reported, and 141 individuals have been hospitalized, according to the CDC.
Michigan health officials have not identified any specific product or supplier as the source of the outbreak, the state health department said.
Natasha Bagdasarian, Michigan’s chief medical executive, said early information indicates lettuce is frequently linked to the outbreak, even though a definitive source has not been identified, and the department is urging residents to take steps to protect their families.
New York has recorded the highest number of cases to date, with 470 reported infections, state health officials said.
Illinois public health officials reported 194 probable cases on July 13, describing the figure as higher than average, while Ohio has recorded more than 400 cases in the past month, the health department reported.
The true number of infections is likely higher than reported, since many individuals recover without seeking medical care and are not tested.
The CDC expects case counts to continue rising as additional data become available.
