Australian authorities are probing a possible vehicular assault that left independent MP Helen Haines with critical injuries.
Counter‑terrorism units have been brought into the investigation after the incident outside Haines’ constituency office in Wangaratta, situated northeast of Melbourne.
Details of the alleged attack on Haines
The 65‑year‑old legislator was struck by a white Toyota SUV outside her office, sustaining serious injuries, especially to her lower limbs.
Police have detained a 43‑year‑old male driver, a development confirmed by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
Investigators reported recovering a knife from the vehicle.
PM Albanese calls the act deliberate
“This was not an accident; it appears to be a deliberate act,” Albanese told the ABC. He added that it is premature to speculate on a possible motive.
At a separate press briefing, Albanese said the nation is “praying for her full recovery.”
While investigators have not yet confirmed intent, officials note a rise in threats and harassment directed at lawmakers and senior public officials across Australia and beyond in recent years.
