Independent Probe Finds No Evidence Linking Gates Foundation to Jeffrey Epstein’s Criminal Activities

Key Findings

On Tuesday, the Gates Foundation revealed that an external investigation conducted by law firm WilmerHale found no connection between the nonprofit and Epstein’s alleged crimes.

While Bill Gates maintained a professional relationship with Epstein—which included discussions regarding a potential donor-advised fund that could have benefited the foundation—Gates has consistently denied any awareness of Epstein’s sex trafficking operations or any personal wrongdoing related to the financier.

The WilmerHale report concluded there was “no evidence” that the foundation participated in or had knowledge of Epstein’s criminal activities, nor was the foundation aware that Epstein was leveraging the organization’s name to facilitate his conduct.

Investigators observed that Gates engaged with Epstein despite being aware of the financier’s 2008 conviction for soliciting prostitution. The probe also noted that foundation employees had multiple times voiced concerns regarding the risks of associating with Epstein due to his criminal history.

While foundation staff met with Epstein roughly 30 times between 2011 and 2014, investigators found these meetings were strictly focused on philanthropic matters and found no evidence that Epstein received any payments from the foundation.

The foundation initiated this independent probe in April following the release of government files that brought new details regarding Gates’ ties to Epstein to light. The foundation has expressed regret regarding the interactions between its employees and Epstein.
