Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s stunning performances in India’s series against Zimbabwe have drawn significant attention, yet India’s interim head coach, VVS Laxman, emphasizes that the 15-year-old batsman must focus on improving his overall fitness to reach his full potential.
Sooryavanshi concluded the three-match T20I series with a remarkable 81 off 49 balls in Harare, securing a 35-run win and completing a 3-0 series sweep. His 151 runs across the tournament made him the leading run-scorer and earned him his maiden Player of the Series honor.
While Sooryavanshi’s fearless batting has already established him as one of India’s most promising young talents, Laxman stresses that enhancing his physical conditioning will be critical for sustained success at the highest level.
“The primary area we need him to improve is his overall fitness,” Laxman stated.
The former India batsman also praised the teenager’s unwavering commitment, citing an incident in the third match where Sooryavanshi insisted on continuing despite an injury sustained during a diving catch at deep square leg.
“He’s a very young player with immense desire to contribute. Even when he got injured today, he wanted to stay on the field. It was our physiotherapist who advised him to leave. This demonstrates his eagerness to support the team in any way possible,” Laxman added.
Laxman has been closely tracking Sooryavanshi’s progress through his role as BCCI Head of Cricket. The youngster thrived under his mentorship during India’s triumph in the ICC Men’s U-19 Cricket World Cup earlier this year, finishing as the tournament’s top run-scorer with 439 runs and claiming the Player of the Tournament award.
The Zimbabwe series marked another milestone in Sooryavanshi’s rapid ascent. After impressing in his two IPL seasons with the Rajasthan Royals, the left-handed opener reaffirmed his international prowess, solidifying his status as one of India’s most dynamic young batsmen.
Despite his accolades, Laxman’s directive remains clear: optimizing his fitness will be essential for Sooryavanshi to maintain his upward trajectory as he embarks on an already distinguished career.
