India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate shared key insights during a pre-match press conference about the team’s selection strategy for the one-off Test against Afghanistan in New Chandigarh. With the game scheduled for June 6, discussions around India’s potential XI have grown, particularly following recent domestic call-ups for emerging players.
Addressing critical topics like the fitness of Mohammed Siraj and the composition of India’s bowling attack, ten Doeschate noted that final decisions remain pending. His remarks suggested potential changes could emerge in the series opener.
Two Young Spinners Competing for Maiden Test Appearances
The most notable revelation from ten Doeschate’s comments was the consideration of Harsh Dubey and Manav Suthar for selection. While the management has not finalized their pairing with established spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Washington Sundar, the possibility of both debutants playing together was left open.
“There’s a slim chance both Dubey and Suthar could feature,” said ten Doeschate, highlighting the duo’s domestic consistency and mutual rapport since their youth cricket days.
The spin-heavy approach may be a response to Afghanistan’s strong spin lineup. Kuldeep Yadav is expected to anchor the spin attack, while Sundar’s all-round value adds flexibility. The remaining spot could go to either debutant, depending on playing conditions. If suitable, India might even field both newcomers alongside experienced spinners.
Though the match does not contribute to the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle, it offers India a chance to evaluate emerging talent. As preparations progress, the team sheet in New Chandigarh will be crucial in determining whether Dubey and Suthar will make their Test debuts.
