The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed on Sunday that bowlers Harshit Rana and Varun Chakravarthy have been ruled out of India’s upcoming white-ball assignments. Rana is unavailable for the three-match One Day International (ODI) series against England, while Chakravarthy will miss the subsequent Twenty20 International (T20I) series in Zimbabwe.
These medical updates arrive during a challenging period for the Indian national team. Under the guidance of head coach Gautam Gambhir, the squad is looking to regain momentum following a difficult run of results, including a 2-0 T20I series loss to Ireland and a 4-0 sweep against England. The recent defeat at Trent Bridge also resulted in India losing its top ranking in the ICC T20I standings. These injury setbacks add significant complications to the management’s efforts to stabilize the team.
Harshit Rana and Varun Chakravarthy miss out on England ODIs and Zimbabwe T20Is
According to an official BCCI media release, both players sustained soft-tissue injuries during the third T20I against England at Trent Bridge. Fast bowler Rana experienced acute discomfort in his right hamstring, with medical scans subsequently confirming a Grade 1 tear. This injury rules him out of the ODI series against England, and he will return to Bengaluru to begin rehabilitation at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE).
Spin bowler Chakravarthy faced a more significant setback, reporting intense pain in his left hamstring during the same match. An MRI scan revealed a Grade 2 hamstring injury. Following consultations with specialists, medical staff have advised a period of rest, ruling him out of the Zimbabwe T20I tour. He is also expected to report to the CoE for recovery.
The injuries have prompted discussions within the Indian cricket community regarding player workload and fitness management. Both Rana and Chakravarthy had recently returned to action following rehabilitation at the CoE, and their immediate re-injury has raised questions regarding medical clearance protocols and the timing of player reintegration into high-intensity international schedules.
India names replacements as ODI squad begins training in Birmingham
The selection committee has named replacements to address the absences. Prince Yadav has been added to the ODI squad to replace Rana, while leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi will join the T20I squad for the tour of Zimbabwe in place of Chakravarthy.
While the roster undergoes changes, India’s core ODI players have already begun preparations in Birmingham. Senior players including Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, and spinner Kuldeep Yadav commenced high-intensity training sessions on Saturday. The three-match ODI series against England is set to begin on Tuesday, July 14, at Edgbaston.
With Shreyas Iyer serving as vice-captain for the England ODIs and captaining the squad for the Zimbabwe T20Is, the leadership transition will be closely watched.
