India’s T20 World Cup-winning wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson has been rested for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe scheduled later this month. The selectors have chosen to hand a chance to Punjab Kings’ Prabhsimran Singh as deputy gloveman and batting option.
Reports indicate that Samson’s exclusion should not be interpreted as the team management distancing itself from the player. Rather, the call was made to manage his workload and assess bench strength during a relatively brief bilateral assignment.
Samson, who was adjudged Player of the Tournament in India’s victorious T20 World Cup 2026 campaign earlier this year, remains integral to the national side’s future plans. He is expected to return for the Asian Games in September.
The Kerala cricketer is not the sole senior figure given a breather. Axar Patel, Harshit Rana, Washington Sundar, and Arshdeep Singh have also been rested following a congested international calendar.
India’s ODI series against England wraps up on July 19, while the Zimbabwe T20I leg commences in Harare on July 23, leaving minimal turnaround for recovery. In Samson’s absence, Ishan Kishan is poised to shoulder primary wicketkeeping duties on the tour.
Zimbabwe tours have historically served as a proving ground for fledgling talent, and the current selection aligns with that tradition. Samson’s unavailability is set to afford greater exposure to teen prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, while Prabhsimran Singh stands to gain valuable match time after a stellar IPL season.
Additionally, Rinku Singh has earned a recall as India looks to bolster its lower-order finishing capabilities in the absence of Hardik Pandya.
“The selection panel was eager to experiment with youth, which explains the inclusion of rookie fast bowlers such as Ashok Sharma, Yash Thakur, and Mayank Yadav. The committee aims to build a robust pacing pool. Regarding Sanju, his rest mirrors that of Axar and Arshdeep,” a source told the Indian Express.
Despite the selectors’ clarification that Samson has merely been rested, the decision has ignited debate among supporters, given that the 31-year-old currently features exclusively in India’s T20I framework.
