India Set for Power Boost as Bumrah and Jadeja Eye Return for Sri Lanka Tests

India is poised for a significant reinforcement ahead of a critical phase of their World Test Championship (WTC) campaign, with star performers Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja expected to return for the upcoming two-match series against Sri Lanka next month.

According to reports from The Times of India, the veteran duo is slated to make their first Test appearances in 263 days when the series commences on August 4. The official squad announcement from the BCCI is anticipated later this week.

Fortifying India’s WTC Ambitions

This series is a vital component of the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle. Following a disappointing home series defeat to South Africa in November 2025, India has slipped in the standings, making the tour of Sri Lanka a mandatory victory to keep their hopes of reaching the WTC final alive.

While the senior players prepare for their return, several fringe players have been gaining momentum; Sai Sudharsan and Dhruv Jurel recently impressed with the bat during India A’s four-day fixtures against Sri Lanka A.

Bumrah’s Dominance Against Sri Lanka

The return of Jasprit Bumrah provides a massive psychological and tactical advantage for India. Across 52 Tests, the premier fast bowler has claimed 236 wickets at a stellar average of 19.88, including 16 five-wicket hauls.

His record against the Sri Lankan side is particularly devastating. In just two Tests against them, Bumrah has taken 10 wickets at an average of 9.00. This includes a career-defining performance in the 2022 day-night Test in Bengaluru, where he ripped through the lineup with 8/47, featuring a first-innings haul of 5/24.

Jadeja: The Ultimate All-Round Asset

Ravindra Jadeja brings similar levels of dominance to the squad. Against Sri Lanka, the veteran all-rounder has maintained an average of 65.20 with the bat (326 runs) while claiming 32 wickets across seven Tests.

Jadeja’s historic peak against the Islanders occurred during the 2022 Mohali Test, where he scored an unbeaten 175 and took nine wickets in the match—becoming the first player in the history of Test cricket to achieve 150+ runs and nine wickets in a single game. Globally, Jadeja remains one of the game’s elite all-rounders with 4,095 runs and 348 wickets.

Injury Concerns and Squad Dynamics

Jadeja’s reintegration may be accelerated by a hamstring injury suffered by Washington Sundar during the recent ODI series against England. Should Sundar be ruled out, India will rely heavily on Jadeja’s mastery of spin-friendly conditions.

With the BCCI expected to finalize the roster this week, India looks to leverage the experience of Bumrah and Jadeja to stabilize their bowling attack and deepen their batting order.
