(RTTNews) – Indian shares fell sharply in early trading on Thursday as rising oil prices and bond yields in global markets heightened concerns about India’s import bill, inflation and corporate earnings.

The benchmark 30‑share BSE Sensex closed down 689 points, or 0.9 %, at 74,139, while the NSE Nifty slipped 222 points, or 0.9 %, to 23,225.

Major losers included Bajaj FinServ, Axis Bank and Bajaj Finance, which dropped 2‑4 % each, and Larsen & Toubro, Asian Paints, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Adani Ports, Indigo and HDFC Bank, each falling more than 1 %.

However, some stocks rose: Sedemac Mechatronics jumped over 5 % after a block deal saw 48.79 lakh shares change hands.

Bharat Dynamics gained 1 % after securing an ₹811‑crore contract from the Defence Ministry.

Avantel surged 9 % on winning a ₹177‑crore order from Zetwerk Manufacturing for satellite‑communication equipment.

Exide Industries advanced 1.3 % following the commissioning of Phase‑I of its 6 GWh lithium‑ion cell manufacturing facility in Bengaluru by its subsidiary, Exide Energy Solutions.
