Rohit Sharma is anticipated to miss India’s upcoming three-match ODI series against Afghanistan this month due to a hamstring injury sustained during the Indian Premier League (IPL). His recovery appears to be delayed, making it unlikely he will be available for the match against the Blue Tigers.
Rohit’s form has come under scrutiny following a lackluster performance in his last ODI series against New Zealand, where he managed just 61 runs across three innings. However, his childhood coach Dinesh Lad has dismissed concerns regarding the 39-year-old’s form and fitness, emphasizing that the criticism is unjust given Rohit’s esteemed status and accomplishments in the 50-over format.
“As a coach, I don’t believe he has anything to prove to anyone. He is genuinely focused on winning the ODI World Cup,” Lad was quoted saying to India Today. “I’ve spoken to him, and he is very clear about his goals. I don’t think he needs to prove his fitness. Despite his age, he remains fit.”
Lad downplayed the critics’ arguments, stating that Rohit’s batting technique and approach are ideally suited for 50-over cricket, as he excels at stabilizing the innings before accelerating against the bowlers.
“Critics have their role to play, but India needs Rohit’s experience if we aim to reach the finals. His technique is flawless. In ODIs, you need to settle in and then go on the offensive, which is exactly what Rohit does,” Lad explained.
Lad also pointed out that during the IPL, Rohit showcased a balanced approach by not only hitting boundaries and sixes but also rotating the strike.
“In the IPL, he demonstrated his technique. He wasn’t just playing big shots but also taking singles and doubles. I don’t understand the critics’ perspective. In my view, he must be in the team,” Lad added.
India faces a challenging schedule in 50-over cricket over the next six months as they prepare for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Lad responded to former national selector Saba Karim’s recent remarks, which highlighted that the upcoming six months are critical for Rohit to secure his spot in India’s plans for the 2027 World Cup. However, Lad clarified that these six months are equally vital for the entire Indian team.
“Why is the focus solely on Rohit? It’s essential for all players,” Lad stated. “Everyone must perform well to retain their place in the team. I can assure you that Rohit will definitely play the 2027 ODI World Cup. He will excel during these six months and beyond. If given the chance, he will deliver outstanding results,” he concluded.
Rohit’s Off-Field Commitment Remains Unwavering: Lad
Lad made it clear that Rohit’s decision to step back from Tests and T20Is does not mean he is taking a break to enjoy his free time. The coach emphasized that Rohit is diligently working on his fitness and practicing daily.
“Rohit not participating in other formats doesn’t mean he is lounging around. He practices every day and is intensely focused on his fitness. Don’t worry, he is preparing hard for the World Cup,” Lad mentioned.
Lad also encouraged Rohit to recall his performance in the 2019 ODI World Cup and adopt a similar strategy in upcoming matches.
“Rohit should remain at the crease and once he settles, he becomes a formidable force,” Lad said. “I would like him to emulate his 2019 World Cup performance. Play like that again,” he concluded.
