JEDDAH: FIFA President Gianni Infantino called for greater respect and dialogue in Jeddah on Wednesday as Saudi Arabia marked its National Day and hosted the opening of the 27th Arabian Gulf Cup.
The 2026 Arabian Gulf Cup began with Iraq drawing 1-1 with Oman at Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Sports City Stadium. Later that day, the hosts defeated Kuwait 1-0 at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium.
“It is a pleasure to be in Saudi Arabia and experience the passion of the people in the streets, proudly displaying their flags on National Day,” Infantino said. “This is an important competition for eight FIFA member associations in the region. Football belongs to everyone, and this is another powerful expression of unity.”
“It is a major and memorable day for the host nation, and it is an honor to be here as FIFA President,” he added.
On Monday, Infantino wrote to FIFA’s 211 member associations, proposing an independent review of its decision-making processes and consultations on governance reforms.
“I look forward to receiving feedback on my letter,” he said. “I have received encouraging messages from different parts of the world, and it is vital that we continue to listen to one another, whether here in Saudi Arabia or in any of FIFA’s 211 member associations.”
“We have a Council meeting next month, and these important issues will remain part of our dialogue. There needs to be a culture of conversation, listening and mutual respect. This is not about generating positive headlines; it is about doing what is right for football. I have never been more determined or committed to that.”
“FIFA is always engaged,” Infantino said. “I want to hear how we can continue to develop football for the benefit of everyone, everywhere.”
