Real Madrid may need to adjust its transfer strategy after Borussia Dortmund centre‑back Nico Schlotterbeck sustained a ligament injury during the match against Ivory Coast. The German defender managed to continue playing until halftime before being substituted.

Fabrizio Romano reported that a medical assessment is forthcoming, and if the injury proves serious, Schlotterbeck’s summer move could be jeopardised.

Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann confirmed concerns about possible ligament damage and the player’s availability for the remainder of the tournament, stating, “Nico is suspected to have sustained a ligament injury. It’s not looking good.”

Real Madrid have long admired Schlotterbeck’s profile. The left‑footed centre‑back combines physical presence, aerial ability, composure on the ball and experience at the highest level, qualities that would add defensive authority to a Mourinho‑led side.

Dortmund previously included a potential swap involving Gonzalo Garcia in the negotiations, but that option now appears unlikely.

While the defender’s attributes are appealing, signing a player with an unresolved injury carries significant risk. Madrid will likely keep the player on their radar but avoid basing their defensive plans on an uncertain recovery.

Patience will be essential while medical staff complete their evaluation. Both Germany and Real Madrid hope the ligament issue is minor, which would keep the prospect of a summer signing alive.

Madrid should continue scouting alternative centre‑back options for pre‑season while monitoring Schlotterbeck’s recovery, ensuring their defensive plans are not left to uncertainty.
