A proposed investment by Alalshikh, co-founder of Zuffa, to acquire a stake in the Championship club was under review by the football regulator since May.
An IFR spokesperson stated: “The IFR is responsible for thoroughly evaluating potential club owners in England’s top five men’s divisions.”
“The assessment concluded within 55 days of the 90-day legal timeframe.”
“A ‘minded-to decision’ to approve the bid was communicated to all parties last week, ahead of the 2026-27 season.”
“Regulatory requirements include evaluating financial stability, resources, wealth sources, and ethical conduct, including checks on legal disputes or investigations.”
Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, expressed concern in June, labeling the regulator’s decision a “critical test” over the investment.
Alalshikh, linked to Saudi Arabia’s de facto leader Mohammed bin Salman, has faced criticism for alleged ‘sportswashing’ to divert attention from human rights issues, including women’s treatment, death penalty use, and LGBT policies.
Beyond owning Egyptian club Pyramids (2018-2019) and Spanish side Almeria (until May 2023), Alalshikh’s recent sale of Almeria to a Saudi investment group highlights his ongoing ties to the region’s business sphere.”
