IPL chairman Arun Dhumal has expressed strong support for the Big Bash League (BBL) decision to hold its season-opening match in India, stating that the move highlights India’s unmatched dominance in the global cricket landscape. The inaugural match, set to take place this December at Chennai’s M. A. Chidambaram Stadium, represents a strategic effort by the Australian league to expand its international reach and engage with a broader demographic.
Dhumal noted that India’s position as the world’s most influential cricket market makes it an ideal destination for international leagues aiming to enhance their commercial viability and global visibility. He observed that Cricket Australia’s choice of venue was likely driven by a combination of sporting prestige and strategic business objectives.
Highlighting India’s central role in the sport’s ecosystem, Dhumal remarked that the decision acknowledges the country’s pivotal influence in shaping the future and driving the worldwide growth of the game.
>“See, India is the biggest cricket market. So definitely, Cricket Australia would want to capitalize on that. And we wish them all the best for their Big Bash inaugural game this season,” Dhumal told Outlook.
This strategic expansion is expected to significantly boost BBL’s visibility among Indian enthusiasts while deepening the relationship between two of the sport’s most powerful governing bodies. As India continues to lead in terms of viewership, sponsorship, and digital engagement, overseas leagues are increasingly prioritizing access to the country’s massive fan base.
Dhumal further connected this expansion to the sport’s broader international trajectory, particularly with cricket’s return to the Olympic Games at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. He believes the sport is entering an era of unprecedented global exposure.
According to Dhumal, Olympic inclusion will likely open new markets and attract diverse audiences, creating immense opportunities for leagues and boards globally.
>“India, being the leader in world cricket, has a lot of scope to add to world cricket,” Dhumal stated. “Since now cricket is becoming part of Olympics, it augurs very well for the game, for its global footprint to reach to the length and breadth across the globe. I’m sure they would have done their calculations and they are expecting a good boost to their domestic tournament.”
