Iran Announces Plans to Establish Restricted Maritime Zone in Persian Gulf Amid Rising Tensions

Tehran announced on Sunday that it had targeted three oil tankers transiting an unauthorized route through the Strait of Hormuz, along with several vessels linked to US interests, in retaliation for American strikes against Iranian tankers over the preceding weekend, according to Bloomberg reports.

Iran’s top security official, Mohsen Rezaee, confirmed that the country would establish a new restricted zone near the strategic waterway within the coming days.

“This zone will extend from the US Navy’s blockade line into portions of the Persian Gulf,” Rezaei stated. “Any vessel entering this newly designated area will be added to Iran’s sanctions list,” he warned.

Rezaei further indicated that Iran and Oman would finalize an agreement in the near future concerning the corridor through Hormuz, with entry and exit points remaining under Iranian jurisdiction.
