TEHRAN: Iran has executed a man detained during the January protests for allegedly firing at police officers, the judiciary announced on Saturday.

According to judicial statements, Siavash Jamshidi Kheirabadi shot at least three times at police on January 8 and was arrested two days later in Shahrekord, southwestern Iran, in possession of a handgun.

He was further accused of coordinating anti-security activities online and soliciting funds for what he described as a mission, though the judiciary did not name any individuals or groups allegedly involved.

The protests began on December 28, 2025, sparked by economic hardship and eventually evolving into broader demonstrations demanding the end of clerical rule in the Islamic Republic.

Iran has attributed the unrest to armed groups and actors supported by the United States and Israel, claiming foreign interference fueled the violence.

Israeli Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu acknowledged during the protests that Israel maintains operatives within Iran, stating their goal is to undermine Iranian capabilities, though he denied direct attempts to overthrow the government.
