NEW YORK: Iran has dismissed a report alleging that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio ordered its delegation to the United Nations General Assembly to leave the country immediately after negotiations aimed at ending the conflict reached a deadlock.
According to a report by Axios, cited by Asharq News, Rubio requested the departure of Iranian delegation members on Monday following the collapse of the talks. Those reportedly asked to leave included Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who arrived in Doha on Tuesday en route to Tehran.
Iran’s mission to the UN disputed the account, stating the delegation’s departure had been pre-scheduled. The mission said its officials left New York on Monday evening according to an itinerary communicated to the U.S. State Department on Sept. 17.
“Having achieved nothing, the State Department resorted to promoting baseless reports,” the Iranian mission said in a statement.
The conflicting narratives emerge amid ongoing diplomatic efforts to secure an agreement to end the war.
