Tehran – Iran executed Mohammad Aref Shahbakhsh on Saturday after he was convicted of participating in a deadly assault on a police station in Khash, Sistan‑Baluchistan province, the judiciary said.
“The death sentence of Mohammad Aref Shahbakhsh – an operative linked to the militant group Jaish Al‑Adl – was carried out this morning following the completion of all legal procedures,” Mizan Online reported.
Jaish Al‑Adl is an outlawed armed organization active in the restive Sistan‑Baluchistan region. The province has long experienced clashes between Iranian security forces and militant groups, including Sunni extremists and members of the Baloch minority. Iran regularly accuses its regional adversaries, the United States and Israel, of supporting these armed factions.
The attack on Qaleh Bid police station resulted in the martyrdom of several police personnel and left others injured, according to judicial media. The exact date of the assault was not disclosed.
Shahbakhsh was convicted on charges of “baghi” (armed rebellion against the Islamic state) and “moharebeh” (waging war against God) for his role in the attack, Mizan said.
Clashes between armed groups and Iranian security forces in the region have escalated again in recent months.
Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, report that Iran carries out more executions annually than any country except China.
The Islamic Republic imposes capital punishment for a wide range of offenses, encompassing murder and security‑related crimes.
