On Wednesday, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that it had launched missiles and drones against 85 U.S. military installations in Bahrain and Kuwait, retreating in response to overnight U.S. strikes on southern Iran.
The Fars News Agency reported that an IRGC statement claimed the United States breached a cease‑fire by conducting airstrikes on locations in the coastal cities of Hormozgan and Mahshahr.
The statement said the IRGC coordinated its naval and aerospace units in a joint operation, employing missiles and drones as its initial response to the U.S. attacks.
It said the operation struck Salman Port, the headquarters of the U.S. Fifth Fleet in Bahrain, and Ali Al‑Salem Air Base in Kuwait, among the 85 U.S. military sites.
The statement also said that a U.S. MQ‑9 drone was shot down over Bushehr Province, though it offered no further details about the incident.
On Tuesday evening, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced a series of strikes on Iran, stating they were conducted as an immediate response to attacks on three commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
In the past 24 hours, UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that three oil tankers were attacked while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, sustaining minor damage, though their nationalities were not disclosed.
The Strait of Hormuz has experienced intermittent security tensions linked to the U.S.-Israel war against Iran that began on February 28.
On June 18, Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding and have since engaged in challenging negotiations, mediated by Pakistan and Qatar, aimed at reaching a final agreement.
