Iranian protesters gathered outside a World Cup stadium on Tuesday, marking the first training session of the Iranian national team in Los Angeles. The demonstration occurred days before Iran is set to face New Zealand in its opening Group Stage match on June 15.
Participants expressed concerns about ongoing political and human rights issues in Iran, while also voicing opposition to what they characterize as the national team’s ties to the Islamic Republic government. The demonstration comes amid controversy surrounding FIFA’s reported prohibition of the pre-revolution “Lion and Sun” flag within World Cup venues.
The flag, historically associated with Iran before the 1979 Islamic Revolution, has become a symbol of resistance for many opposition groups and Iranian diaspora communities worldwide. Organizer Zarah Sari, who participated in the protest, described the demonstration as both anti-government and pro-peace.
