Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps announced on Friday that it struck a U.S. special operations command center at Al‑Tanf in Syria, according to Iranian state media.
Reuters was unable to independently verify the claim, and neither the Syrian government nor the U.S. military offered an immediate comment.
In February, the U.S. military announced the completion of its withdrawal from the Al‑Tanf base, which lies at the tri‑border area of Syria, Jordan, and Iraq.
Syria has sought to stay out of the broader regional conflict that has engulfed neighboring states, such as Lebanon, where Hezbollah has been fighting Israeli forces, and Iraq, where Iran‑backed militias have carried out drone and rocket attacks.
Syrian President Ahmed al‑Sharaa stated in March that his country would remain uninvolved in any conflict unless it was directly attacked.
“Unless Syria is attacked by any party, it will stay out of any conflict,” Sharaa said during an event hosted by the Chatham House think tank in London.
The Guard also said Iran retained full control of the Strait of Hormuz and that oil and gas exports would be halted through the waterway for as long as U.S. attacks persisted, according to the state media report.
This is an ongoing story.
