Iranian air defense forces have intercepted and destroyed a US MQ-1 drone over the Strait of Hormuz, as reported by the semi-official Fars news agency.
The drone was detected and targeted by Iranian army air defense units positioned in the country’s southeast while it transited the critical waterway. It was tracked through Iran’s integrated air defense network before being engaged and eliminated using domestically developed systems.
According to Fars, additional details regarding the incident will be provided at a later time. The United States has not yet issued a statement in response to the report.
This development unfolds amid escalating tensions between Iran and the US concerning the Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery for global energy shipments. Disputes over navigation rights persist, with Tehran accusing Washington of non-compliance with the Islamabad memorandum of understanding. Concurrently, Iran and Oman have engaged in talks to establish a temporary safe transit corridor through the strait.
