Iraqi Brigadier General Killed in Baghdad Illegal Housing Demolition Shootout

BAGHDAD — Iraqi military personnel and municipal workers came under fire in Baghdad on Thursday while attempting to remove illegal housing structures. The attack resulted in the death of a senior officer and injuries to five others, according to an Iraqi security official and state media reports.

The security official, speaking on condition of anonymity, identified the fatality as an army brigadier general and reported that a police officer and four municipal workers were among the wounded. The incident occurred in Baghdad’s southern district of Dora.

Security forces and police cordoned off the area, and the Baghdad Operations Commander visited the scene to oversee the response, the official added.

State media confirmed the loss of the brigadier general and the injuries to several municipal workers, noting that the demolition was carried out under legal orders issued to Baghdad’s municipality.

Dora, a southern neighborhood known for its extensive agricultural land, has been a hotspot for unauthorized construction.
