Isaac Cruz Defends WBC Interim Title with Stoppage of Nestor Bravo as Challenger Reflects on His First Career Knockout Defeat

Isaac Cruz secured a first-round knockout victory to defend his WBC Interim super-lightweight title for the second consecutive time, stopping Nestor Bravo in San Diego. Following the defeat, Bravo has provided his assessment of ‘Pitbull’s’ striking power.

The bout highlighted the latest Mexican-Puerto Rican boxing rivalry, as the Arecibo-born challenger sought an upset victory. Bravo aimed to capture the Interim strap, a move that would have positioned him to challenge Dalton Smith for the WBC super-lightweight world title.

However, Bravo could not overcome Cruz, who dominated the scrappy encounter by flooring his opponent twice. A devastating left-hook ultimately closed the fight in dramatic fashion, granting Cruz his first victory inside the distance since claiming the WBA super-lightweight title against Rolando Romero in 2024.

Despite the decisive defeat, Bravo—who had never previously been stopped—attributed his downfall to Cruz’s awkwardness and physical presence rather than raw punching power. He made this assessment to FightHub.

“To be honest, he isn’t the heaviest hitter. He’s just a bit awkward with his height, if you know what I mean. He appeared a little taller on weigh-in day, but when he removed his clothes, he was shorter, so I didn’t see a few of the shots coming.

“It’s not that his hands are particularly heavy, but the unexpected shots are what do the damage. Right from the first round, he landed a punch behind my head—though it wasn’t intentional—but that blow truly stunned me early on.”

‘Pitbull’ is now reportedly linked to a quick turnaround and a potential challenge against Ryan Garcia for the WBC welterweight title. However, a decision must be made swiftly, as Garcia is also understood to be in early negotiations for a unification bout with WBA welterweight champion Teofimo Lopez.
