The Malian military junta is confronting one of its most severe security challenges in recent months. A wave of coordinated attacks by the jihadist group JNIM and its Tuareg ally, the FLA, has targeted army positions across the north, undermining confidence in the government’s capacity to contain the insurgency.
Since seizing the northern city of Kidal in May, the insurgents have pursued aggressive territorial gains. Reports now indicate they have also overrun military positions in Gao, despite the presence of Russian-backed forces supporting the Malian armed forces.
This latest offensive comes as the junta faces mounting pressure, with increasing concerns about the security of the capital, Bamako, and the nearby military stronghold of Kati.
