Israel Captures Beaufort Fortress in Lebanon as Hezbollah Resistance Intensifies Amid Escalating Cross-Border Conflict]
Israeli forces have captured the strategic Beaufort fortress in southern Lebanon, marking one of the most significant advancements in the current Israeli military campaign in the region. The Israeli military announced the seizure on Sunday, highlighting it as a key tactical achievement in their ongoing operations.
The fall of Beaufort, a site with deep historical significance, comes amid intensified fighting between Israeli forces and Hezbollah fighters. The fortress, which crowns a strategic hilltop, carries profound symbolic weight given its role during Israel’s previous occupation of southern Lebanon from 1982 to 2000.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu characterized the capture as a “dramatic step” and indicated that Israeli forces intend to “deepen and expand” their territorial control in Lebanon. However, military analysts have raised concerns about the strategic value of the holding, particularly given Hezbollah’s use of advanced cable-borne drones that have already claimed Israeli casualties.
Retired General Eyal Ben-Reuven warned that increased territorial occupation could prove costly, stating, “The deeper in we go, the more troops we’ll need, the more vulnerable we’ll be, and the more casualties we’ll have.”
The conflict has triggered a massive humanitarian crisis, with over 1 million Lebanese displaced according to U.N. figures. Israeli authorities have designated much of southern Lebanon as a combat zone, forcing residents from communities like Nabatieh to flee their homes.
The renewed fighting represents a stark escalation from previous exchanges, with Israeli airstrikes killing hundreds in Lebanon since a partial ceasefire in April. Hezbollah has responded with attacks on Israeli positions, resulting in dozens of Israeli casualties.
The violence threatens broader negotiations between Israel and the United States aimed at ending the larger conflict with Iran. While the Trump administration continues mediating between Lebanon and Israel, analysts emphasize that lasting stability will require diplomatic engagement alongside military action.
“Without a diplomatic process, nothing is going to be achieved,” General Ben-Reuven emphasized.
The current hostilities began in early March when Hezbollah launched rockets into northern Israel in solidarity with Iran following U.S.-Israeli attacks. Israel’s subsequent campaign has resulted in more than 3,000 deaths in Lebanon, according to the Lebanese health ministry.
Lebanese officials, including Hezbollah representative Hassan Fadlallah, have condemned Israel’s advance as evidence that diplomatic talks have yielded no concessions to Lebanon, calling on Lebanese citizens to resist the invasion.
The Lebanese military, significantly weaker than Hezbollah’s fighting forces, faces limitations in confronting the group directly, particularly as Israeli presence in southern Lebanon undermines Lebanese government legitimacy in theeyes of its own population.
