CAIRO, September 6 (Reuters) – Health officials reported that an Israeli airstrike on Sunday killed a man and his 8‑year‑old daughter in the Gaza Strip.
Mohamed Abu Selmia, director of Al‑Shifa Hospital, Gaza’s largest medical facility, said the strike hit a vehicle in western Gaza City, killing Youssef Akila and his daughter Wafaa and injuring six others.
An Israeli military spokesperson said the forces were targeting a Hamas militant and are still investigating the incident.
The October 2025 ceasefire, brokered by the United States, temporarily halted major combat, yet Israeli strikes have continued, with the military saying they are intended to prevent attacks by Hamas and other Gaza militants.
Hamas alleges that Israel is breaching the ceasefire and undermining the broader U.S.‑backed initiative championed by President Donald Trump, which envisions Israeli withdrawals and the disarmament of Hamas.
Since the ceasefire began last October, more than 1,300 Palestinians—predominantly civilians—have been killed, according to the territory’s health officials, whereas the Israeli military reports four of its soldiers have been killed.
Hamas typically does not release data on fighter fatalities.
