JERUSALEM: The Israeli military stated that over a dozen Palestinian football figures killed in Gaza were linked to militant groups, including a FIFA-registered referee. Hamas and Islamic Jihad denied the accusations, asserting that soccer players, referees, and coaches were unjustly targeted. The official list includes individuals identified through organized documentation as militants affiliated with Hamas and other groups. The General Staff released details identifying some of those named through public sources, including reports that two of the 12 had participated in the October 7 attacks on Israel.

Among those identified was Mohammed Sami Mohammed Khattab, accused of being a terrorist in the Islamic Jihad Central Wing Brigade, despite his high profile as an international assistant referee. Documents released state that he held command-level positions. Three photos of Khattab were provided, including one wearing a FIFA jersey and another in tactical attire holding a weapon. Football federations including the Asian Football Confederation published tributes after his death, which the military claims were based on misinformation.

The IDF defended its stance, stating: “We reveal the truth behind the narratives that incorrectly characterize our fighters as civilians. The evidence confirms their operational roles.” A military source mentioned that participation in the October 7 attacks contributed to their inclusion. Multiple sources indicate that some individuals were killed during home raids or airstrikes. These individuals based on information obtained through open-source channels have been confirmed as operatives linked to Hamas.

UK-based analyst Afireden Awad criticized the move, stating: “Israel is attempting to legitimize attacks on football figures with false counterarguments.” The military rejects this perspective insisting they target combatants embedded in civilian zones. The Palestinian Football Association condemns the allegations claiming players were killed in their homes. No public statements from Hamas or Islamic Jihad responding to the claims were available as of the release of this document.
