A nine-month-old Palestinian boy was killed in the Israeli-occupied West Bank on Friday when soldiers opened fire on a car carrying him and his innocent relatives, according to his family and local health officials, as reported by CNN.
The child’s parents sustained injuries during the shooting, which occurred in Hebron, a city with approximately 200,000 Palestinian residents and thousands of Israeli settlers, per the PA-led health ministry servicing parts of the territory.
The Israel Defense Forces stated that soldiers fired at the vehicle after perceiving it as a threat that was accelerating toward their position, CNN reported. They confirmed injuries to three Palestinian civilians and called for continued review of the incident.
Abed Abu Haykal, the boy’s uncle, told CNN that his sister-in-law had been seated in the front of the car alongside 7-month-old Sam Abu Haykal and two others—two grandchildren—during the attack. As per CNN, the family recounted that Fahd Abu Haykal halted the car to avoid confrontation, but two gunshots struck the windshield, fatally injuring Sam.
Abed emphasized that passengers relied on measures other than warning shots. “They shot us directly,” he stated, contrasting this to expectations of military protocol, CNN reported.
The targeting reflects broader patterns of civilian harm in Israeli-Palestinian clashes. The UN counted over 1,000 Palestinians killed by security forces in the West Bank since October 7, 2023, with documented casualties including women and children, CNN reported.Criticized by human rights organizations, the Israeli government asserts its military operations prioritize minimizing civilian casualties, CNN reported. IDF officials note that soldiers frequently face urgent decisions amid persistent threats from Palestinian militant groups that target Israeli personnel and communities, CNN reported.
In March, four members of the Bani Odeh family were killed, aged 9, 9, 17 and 67, including their 2-year-old and 4-year-old children, according to a health ministry report. Palestinian victims said that IDF forces overturned and struck their car before opening fire, but military officials have said it was self-defense to stop a vehicle that “rushed toward them,” CNN reported. The Israeli Justice Ministry’s disciplinary unit launched an investigation into this case, CNN reported, but prosecutors had not announced charges at the time.
Human rights watchdogs report that investigations into military actions in Gaza and the West Bank are rarely followed by prosecutions. Between 2018 and 2022, Yesh Din organization documented 107 cases of IDF soldiers killing Palestinians; only one soldier faced charges, receiving a three-month community service sentence via a plea agreement, CNN reported.
