ZDNET’s key takeaways
- Gemini in Android Auto is changing my daily drive.
- It’s making me safer, providing entertainment, and more.
- I actually look forward to car time now.
In early April, I began testing the newly released Gemini integration within Android Auto during a weekend trial. Initially, I used Gemini to obtain information such as business hours, theater locations, and answers to spontaneous questions, which proved so useful that I began to rely on Google’s AI assistant.
Two months later, I continue to use Gemini for these purposes and have discovered additional applications. While Gemini does not perform tasks beyond its pre‑integration capabilities, its convenience encourages more frequent use, and it is reshaping the character of my daily drives.
Reduced Need to Reach for My Phone or Vehicle Display
Gemini now manages many tasks that previously required me to reach for my phone or vehicle display. Whether informing my wife that I’m running late, locating a quality coffee shop in an unfamiliar city, or obtaining any piece of information, I simply query Gemini. Unlike Google Assistant, which demanded precise commands and often required repetition, Gemini reliably interprets my intent. It also supports multi‑command requests, such as “Find a good burger spot on my way home and text my wife to ask if she wants anything.”
Family Drives Become More Engaging
My children have grown to enjoy Gemini, and I no longer hear frequent complaints of boredom from the backseat. They appreciate the trivia games Gemini creates on virtually any subject. Gemini’s Live mode enables natural conversation, and it also handles interactive prompts effectively.
When my child requested a choose‑your‑own‑adventure story set in North Carolina that incorporated local landmarks and well‑known figures, we continued reading the story in the car after arriving home, eager to see how it concluded.
Enhanced Connection to My Home
Integrated with Google Home, Gemini controls many of my smart‑home devices, ensuring they are prepared when I arrive. I can adjust the thermostat, illuminate the porch light at night, open the garage, and even activate my smart ice maker to have ice waiting for me.
Consequently, my vehicle functions as a hands‑free remote control for my smart home ecosystem.
My Drives Have Become More Productive
Gemini enables me to convert idle car time into productive moments, freeing up time at home. While I may still explore topics from podcasts, I can now summarize emails and messages, brainstorm ideas, set reminders for tasks I might forget, and capture fleeting thoughts. Unlike the previous Assistant, which was limited, Gemini offers far broader capabilities that keep me connected throughout the day.
Although Gemini is not flawless and occasionally misinterprets simple requests, my two months of experience have shown that car time is now something I anticipate—whether to accomplish tasks, enjoy family moments, or engage in conversation.
