During a commentary appearance on German broadcaster ARD ahead of Germany’s 2‑1 victory over Ivory Coast on June 20, former Bayern Munich midfielder Schweinsteiger described the Ivorian side’s approach as a mix of African football, unorthodox, somewhat wild, and perhaps less tactically disciplined, making it inherently unpredictable.

Schweinsteiger’s remarks have sparked controversy in German media, prompting former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp to refuse to address the question.

Speaking to journalists in New York during the World Cup, Klopp declined to discuss the matter, stating, “If you wish to pursue this discussion, I have no intention of answering. Everyone seems eager to involve me, but it is not my responsibility to explain; it is a serious issue, and I’m unsure what is appropriate to say.” He added, “For African people, it’s one thing; for others, it’s another, and I am not present in this context.”

Despite their defeat by Germany, Ivory Coast progressed to the last 32 after victories over Ecuador and Curaçao in Group E.

In the first knockout round on June 30 in Arlington, Texas, the team will face either France or Norway.
