Sometimes, winning ugly is the only way to win, particularly on the road in the NFL. Determined not to let history repeat after a tough loss to the Bengals last year, the Jacksonville Jaguars’ defense stood tall when the stakes were highest.
Under defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile, the team’s defensive identity is coming into sharp focus. The mission is simple yet effective: shut down the opponent’s run game and force crucial turnovers.
Against the Bengals, the defense executed this plan to perfection, limiting Cincinnati to just 23 rushing yards on 15 carries while securing two interceptions. One of those key picks came deep in the red zone, underscoring Jacksonville’s ability to deliver under pressure in critical situations.
Now sitting second in the NFL in run defense, the Jaguars are allowing an average of just 74.3 rushing yards per game. They have also yet to surrender a single rush of 75 or more yards since 2024, holding opponents to a stingy 3.3 yards per carry average.
Since the start of 2025, Campanile’s unit has forced 39 takeaways, leading the league alongside the Chicago Bears. Sunday’s two interceptions of Joe Burrow marked the 13th time under Campanile’s tenure that the Jaguars have recorded multiple takeaways in a single game—a testament to a turnover-forcing identity that is truly in their DNA.
Defensive standout Travis Hunter was sensational in the victory, playing every single one of the Jaguars’ 76 defensive snaps.
Hunter was targeted seven times, allowing just four receptions for 26 yards while forcing two pass breakups. Although one of his interceptions was wiped out by a roughing the passer penalty, the performance was arguably the best defensive showing of his young NFL career.
On offense, tight end Brenton Strange delivered a breakout performance, hauling in a career-high 95 yards on seven receptions. Three of those catches went for 52 yards on third down, proving decisive after a quiet start to the season.
With the win, the AFC South standings are starting to take shape as the Jaguars improve to 3-1 and the Colts move to 2-2, while the Texans and Titans remain winless at 0-4. Looking ahead, Jacksonville will head to England for two consecutive road games before earning a Week 7 bye week, with a banged-up Eagles team and the struggling Texans on the horizon.
