Jahmyr Gibbs, a running back entering his prime, has incorporated mixed martial arts into his offseason regimen.
Via Eric Woodyard of ESPN, Gibbs has added mixed martial arts to his training program.
“It improves body control,” Gibbs said. “My base and technique allow me to position my hands earlier, especially when blocking.”
He also notes that the practice enhances overall fitness.
“I feel my physique has improved and my conditioning is markedly different,” Gibbs explained. “Football conditioning involves intermittent bursts, whereas MMA demands continuous movement of the shoulders, knees, elbows, and ground work, leaving me far less fatigued.”
As the Lions prepare to make Gibbs their bell cow tailback, his performance may exceed previous levels.
He has averaged 5.3 yards per carry over a career that includes three consecutive Pro Bowl selections. In 2024, he led the league with 16 rushing touchdowns while playing just 56% of offensive snaps.
As he takes on a larger role in 2026, Gibbs is positioned to further increase his impact.
