While Edge of Tomorrow has cultivated a devoted following since its 2014 release, another time-loop thriller — arriving three years earlier — remains largely undiscovered by mainstream audiences. Doug Liman’s Tom Cruise vehicle struggled at the box office but found second life on home media, becoming one of the most-requested sequels in recent memory. Its predecessor, Duncan Jones’s 2011 feature Source Code, is currently available on Prime Video’s Howdy add-on, though only for a limited window.
The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Captain Colter Stevens, a helicopter pilot who awakens on a Chicago commuter train in another man’s body. He discovers he’s part of a government program — the “Source Code” — that projects his consciousness into the final eight minutes of a bombing victim’s life. Tasked with identifying the bomber before a second attack, Stevens relives the same sequence repeatedly, each iteration revealing new clues while the clock resets.
Source Code marked Jones’s studio debut following his acclaimed indie breakthrough Moon (2009) with Sam Rockwell. The director would later helm the fantasy epic Warcraft (2016) and is now preparing his animation debut, Rogue Trooper. The supporting cast includes Michelle Monaghan, Vera Farmiga, and Jeffrey Wright.
Produced on a modest $32 million budget, the film grossed nearly $150 million worldwide and holds a 92% “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The consensus highlights its ability to ground high-concept sci-fi in human stakes: “Finding the human story amidst the action, director Duncan Jones and charming Jake Gyllenhaal craft a smart, satisfying sci-fi thriller.” Notably, its score edges out Edge of Tomorrow‘s 91%.
Source Code is streaming on the Howdy add-on via Prime Video until November 1.
